U is for Underground

odhu/ntinggoThe I-Spy Tube List

How many of these can you spot?

• A famous person sitting opposite you trying ever so hard not to be noticed  [20 points]

• A poster assuring the travelling public that the Underground will be perfectly safe under the government’s new funding proposals, a few feet away from some serious dodgy wiring and a crumbling wall  [-50 points]

• A passenger rushing onto the platform at the last minute, jamming their foot in the door and just managing to squeeze in  [10 points]

• A passenger rushing onto the platform at the last minute, failing to jam their foot in the door and left red-faced on the platform  [50 points]

• An unmarried couple travelling to work, one in yesterday’s clothes, sharing a last passionate kiss before they part company to make sure they don’t arrive in the office together  [25 points]

• Two friends talking loudly, oblivious to the total silence elsewhere in the carriage  [5 points]

• Three bemused tourists standing immobile on a staircase, trying to work out where they’re going, blocking everybody else’s way out  [–5 points]

How many bonus points can you score?

• Smugly exiting the train carriage immediately in front of the ‘Way Out’ sign  [10 points]

• Lurking sufficiently close to a passenger who’s just about to get off the train so that you can grab their seat a fraction of a second ahead of the old woman weighed down by shopping bags and the young mother with three kids  [25 points]

• Never ever having to buy your own newspaper but instead reading all the headlines over the shoulder of a nearby passenger  [15 points]

• Buying something extremely bulky on impulse in the West End, then attempting to get it home on the tube and down the escalator  [ -10 points]

• Squeezing into a carriage packed so tightly up against three members of the opposite sex that, in any other circumstances, you’d be arrested for gross indecency  [30 points]

• Accidentally walking into the carriage containing the 12-year-old accordion player  [-20 points]

• All human life is present on the Underground, Score 1 point for spotting each category of human life over one year [max 1863 points]
